Request for Assistance

The Governor’s Science Working Group is working on coastal wetland forest regeneration and restoration issues and would like to solicit your assistance.  We are trying to locate forested areas of baldcypress where we can collect information to aid in our understanding of forest regeneration and establishment following harvesting.

The following is a general list of information that we would like to try to get from the landowners.  The more information the better, but we certainly need those with an asterisk (*).

Our primary goal is to evaluate the types of forest regeneration that are occurring after harvesting operations and the conditions associated with this forest regeneration. Sites must have been harvested prior to 1994. We will probably need to visit the sites two or three times to collect data and take some increment cores from trees to determine ages and form of regeneration.    We will take measurements of older trees, regeneration and some specific site data.

Information we require are is as follows:

1.  Contact Information including name, phone number, and mailing address of landowner.*

2.  Location  of sites harvested prior to 1994 (as much detail as possible)*

3.  Permission to collect data on tree growth, species, water depths and to core some trees for age information from the site * (if selected)

Additional information we would like to have includes:

·   Current & long-term hydrology (general indication if water levels have changed over time (access to water level data would be great)

·   Regeneration (baldcypress and tupelo) - an indication of success by the landowner or manager

·   Whether or not it was clearcut or partial harvest

·   Type of harvesting operation, helicopter logging, shear, etc.

·    Elevation

·    Species composition prior to harvest

·     Initial stand conditions, (pre-harvest data if collected)

·     Soil series, substrate, soil strength,

·     Note any other disturbances other than harvesting.

Primary sites of interest include coastal forests from Washington Parish on the east through the northern end of the Atchafalaya basin then southward through Acadia parish and  west including Cameron  and all areas to the south to the coast (see highlighted are on map)
